Developed Recreation and Trails Technician

Position Title – Forestry Technician (Recreation and Trails), GS-0462-05 Employer – Feather River Resource Conservation

District Status – Non-Exempt/Full-time Seasonal
Location – Quincy, CA
Compensation – $19.00/hour
Primary roles – Developed recreation maintenance, trail maintenance and monitoring

Position Summary
This position is located on a Forest Service unit performing a variety of duties in support of the unit’s developed recreation and trail program.

Major Duties
Serves as a member of a trail maintenance team to maintain, repair, and build trails throughout the Forest Service unit to improve recreational access to forest lands and protect the land from resource damage. Builds trails with gravel and associated materials, restores impacted areas, and replaces signage as needed. Constructs a variety of trail structures such as turnpikes, boardwalks, retaining walls, and rock features

Prepares construction materials, ensures proper tool maintenance, and reports work completed. May complete trail logs, condition, and prescription surveys.

Assures recreation sites are operated and maintained regularly to ensure excellent service to the public. Reports on conditions and use of sites and areas. Cleans and maintains forest operated campgrounds, day use areas and trailheads. Assists with campground and day use maintenance projects such as installation of bear boxes, picnic tables, fire rings or other.

Maintains contact with and provides support to Campground Host(s) and the public. Acts as liaison between campground hosts and the forest to manage concessionaire operated campgrounds.

Oversees routine maintenance of trails at dispersed recreation sites including cleanup and naturalizing. May interact and work with forest visitors, trail partner organizations, and volunteers. Employee is expected to carry out work with a team and occasionally independently.

Performs safety hazard analyses of public recreation use areas and takes or recommends corrective action.

Adheres to regulations concerning trails maintenance specific to the Wilderness Act by using traditional tools such as cross-cut saws while working in the wilderness. May patrol wilderness to ensure areas are operated, used and maintained in accordance with Wilderness Management Plan. Cleans both roadside and/or backcountry dispersed sites. Installs and maintains information boards, travel signs, regulatory signs and other signs associated with recreation sites, travel management and safety.

Provides detailed information about recreation opportunities to Forest visitors and explains the Forest Service rules and regulations. Provides information on resource management practices, regulations and current conditions.

Collects, compiles and summarizes information for data reporting. Schedule includes one weekend day (Sat or Sunday negotiable).

Job involves daily driving in a Forest Service vehicle, use of hand tools, chainsaws, and other trail maintenance equipment. Personal protective equipment including hardhats, gloves, and boots are required. The work requires walking and climbing in steep, uneven terrain, exposure to adverse weather and insects, performing physical labor, bending, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds or more. The work is performed outdoors where there is exposure to extremes of weather and temperature.

Season
The position start date is May 19th, 2025 and goes through mid-September.
