Within the last two field seasons, the District has gained a local reputation as a reliable small-scale hand thinning crew. Each year the District hires and trains a crew of field technicians on chainsaw operations and maintenance, as well as the desired outcomes of hand thinning for vegetation management. Most hand thin projects have a goal of reducing fuel loads, but the RCD also engages in thinning work to reduce conifer competition in aspen stands and encroachment in meadows.
With the increasing capabilities of our hand-thinning crew, the RCD aims to offer our fee-for-service work in conjunction with our Landowner Assistance program. The District hopes to offer an affordable option to landowners within the WUI who may not be eligible for other assistance programs.
